On May 2, a Supreme Court draft was leaked to Politico. Justice Samuel Alito, a member of the Supreme Court, wrote a draft to overturn the famous court case Roe v Wade from 1973. With the support of four other justices– Clarence Thomas, Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett– the majority of the court is agreeing on the idea of overturning the decision of Roe v Wade(1973).

The monumental court case Roe v Wade was a historical landmark that legalized abortion under the notion that it was a woman’s constitutionally-protected right to choose. The court ruled 7-2 back in 1973 and decided the abortion should be legal in the United States.

Now after decades of our country being divided between Democrats and Republicans, the battle is on what will happen and what will the court decide based on the draft written by Justice Alito. He claims that the decision originally made was flawed because protecting abortions was never part of the nation’s original values.

But what would overturning the decision made under Roe v Wade do for the country?

“The death of Roe will intensify our national animus, turning red states and blue into mutually hostile legal territories. You think we hate each other now? Just wait until the new round of lawsuits start,”

On Monday May 2, 2022 a Supreme Court draft was leaked to Politico. Justice Samuel Alito, a member of the Supreme Court, wrote a draft to overturn the famous court case Roe v Wade from 1973. With the support of four other justices: Clarence Thomas, Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett the majority of the court is agreeing on the idea of overturning the decision of Roe v Wade(1973).

The courtcase Roe v Wade was a historical landmark that legalzed abortion. The court ruled 7-2 back im 1973 and decided the abortion should be legal in the United States.

Now after several years of our country being divided between democrats and republicans, the battle is on what will happen and what will the court decide based on the draft written by Justice Alito. He claims that the decision originally made was flawed because protecting abortions was never part of the nations original values.

But what would overturning the decision made under Roe v Wade do for the country? “The death of Roe will intensify our national animus, turning red states and blue into mutually hostile legal territories.” wrote reporter Michelle Goldberg in her article “The death of Roe is going to tear America apart.”

In the U.S., the stance on abortion has been split in two: those in the conservative side (the reds referenced in the article) against abortion and the liberal side (the blues referenced) who are pro-choice, meaning women have the right to choose what medically to do with their bodies.

According to “Divided States of America: Roe v Wade is ‘precursor to larger struggles,” if the decision of the historic court case were to be overturned, “the first restrictions would take effect in 13 states with so-called trigger laws to be enacted once Roe is overturned. Some such laws ban abortions almost completely while others would outlaw it after six or 15 weeks.”

Currently, the news, as well as social media platforms, are all covering the report that Roe v Wade could get overturned. The idea behind the draft is a conservative tactic that could affect several throughout the country.

On social media platforms, like Instagram and Twitter, many are arguing that the draft to overturn Roe v Wade is just a way to take the country back in time and oppress women’s rights. However, some argue that overturning the court ruling is a way to help increase birth rates in order to help the country.

There is also skepticism about how overturning Roe v Wade could eventually lead to overturning more court cases now that the court is predominantly conservative.

Although Roe v Wade has not been overturned yet, the possibility of it happening are around the same as it not happening. There is still much the court has to share and to continue updating on the status of whether or not Roe v Wade will be overturned you can check Politico.
