Whenever you think back on your childhood, one of the first things that come to mind would be old shows you used to watch. You would reminisce on the nostalgic feeling of your old shows and may want your favorite shows to be rebooted. Although the reboot of old shows would be the dream of any kid born in the early 2000s, the reboots of our old shows are far from what we desire. 

Teen Titans Go

The reboot of “Teen Titans” was in the form of a show called “Teen Titans Go”. This show is a prime example why reboots of old shows shouldn’t be recurring concepts to be created by production studios. Furthermore, the “GO” in the reboot should stand for “Generate Opposite” as it produced contrasting quality to that of the original.

The original “Teen Titans” was amazing! It was one the best DC Comics animated shows and topped the animated shows of Batman and Superman during its time. “Teen Titans” exemplified old shows that had sophisticated plots, complex characters and connected storylines every episode.

Old shows like “Avatar: The Last Airbender” and “Courage The Cowardly Dog” also have diverse excellence in their plot devices that make them prestigious and have replay value to all ages.

“Teen Titans Go” suffers the same problem many reboots face today: the appeal to kids. Now there is nothing wrong with appealing to kids as it’s a very good marketing tool, but the container of content is busted when the show is tailored to kids when rebooted.

“Teen Titans Go” indulges endless fart jokes, uncle jokes and jokes that only little kids would laugh at. What made “Teen Titans” so good was the fact that their jokes would be clever jokes that even teens/adults would find humorous.

Besides, another flaw that “Teen Titans Go” faces is their frame of reference. They have a good concept where superheroes struggle to live with one another, but they ruin it by using the actual Teen Titans. The use of already established characters and making them act certain ways they wouldn’t normally do deteriorates the humor. 

Now, if they had parody versions of the Teen Titans doing bizarre actions, then it would be better. For instance, a parody version of Robin being a terrible and foolish leader who struggles to keep his team together creates a comedic effect. In your mind, you know Robin is a strong and intelligent leader but the parody makes him the opposite. 

“Teen Titans Go” had Robin go from an alpha leader to a lousy and weak one. Moreover, Beast Boy went from a mystic teen who can transform into any animal willingly to a kid who loves pizza and partying. In that sense, the characters were turned into a persona that reflects the actions of children, resulting in stripping the original “Teen Titans” from its glory days.

Tom & Jerry

The reboot of “Tom & Jerry” would be in the form of a movie called “Tom & Jerry The Movie”. The movie was highly anticipated ever since the trailer aired but was a huge disappointment when it came out.

As kids growing up, Tom and Jerry fighting, planning schemes, and participating in brainless chases for 11 minutes straight was thrilling and exhilarating. But when you try and drag out a movie of a cat-versus-mouse war, it becomes repetitive as you see these two doing that the whole movie. 

Tim Story, the director of the Tom and Jerry movie, explained his approach in making the movie great. Although his approach was ideal, the execution was poor in terms of making the “Tom and Jerry movie” a ‘classic’.

“I have to make it feel classic and nostalgic for that generation, but also do I maybe wanna modernize these characters a little bit and have it for a 21st Century, modern generation for kids?”

A flaw that “Tom & Jerry” faces is that the movie can’t be about them. Essentially, Tom and Jerry’s clashes are toward the wedding planner’s career and the actual wedding. The main plot of the movie wasn’t centered around Tom and Jerry, it was centered around the wedding . This makes Tom and Jerry feel like side characters in their own movie.

In any case, “Tom & Jerry” was known for its smart humor, with scenes of havoc occurring between Tom and Jerry. There would be segments where a trope is done, regarding their theme or location in the episodes to create hilarious moments.

Unfortunately, this movie has scenes where the whole scene is one joke, making the comedy feel forced, lackluster and makes you ready for the next scene to occur. Like how you can’t force someone to like something, you can’t force someone to laugh at something and that is what the majority of the scenes exemplify.

However, the actors in the movie are exceptional, Chloe Grace Moretz demonstrates her own personality and Micheal Peña brought his amusing comedy. The problem is that “Tom & Jerry” does not need a live action production to be made into a great film. The inclusion of characters like Spike, Butch, and Tuffy in “Tom & Jerry” before were adequate for the show. 

The underlying issue of Reboots

What made your favorite old tv shows unique and special? Was it merely the fact that they make you relive your childhood or because they were entertaining? Well, reboots tend to untie perfectly wrapped-up shows and resorting producers to create new storylines and new characters. The new material added ruins the value of the original show.

Riverdale star Cole Sprouse shared his thoughts on a reboot of “The Suite Life of Zack and Cody” on The Drew Barrymore Show.

Usually, actors of old shows would appeal to their fanbase by teasing or giving hope to their fans on a potential reboot, but Sprouse flat out stated he wouldn’t want to ruin the original show. 

“Reboots are a tricky thing, you know,” Sprouse claimed. “The original shows, when they become successful, sit in this little golden plate of nostalgia and when you modernize it and go back to it, it has the potential to really disenfranchise the original fan base. So it’s a very, very touchy thing.”

The reason why you look back at childhood moments like your birthdays as a toddler, elementary experiences, and the baby tooths that came out of your mouth is that those moments can never happen again. You never forget experiences that can only happen at one point in your life and allow you to cherish those experiences.

The bottom line is that reboots are not needed to relive our youth. We would be better off getting the original show back instead of a spin-off version. Although there are some good reboots out there, they still would ruin the nostalgic feeling of the original.

As people say, too much of a good thing is a bad thing. Too much of a good thing makes that ‘thing’ less valuable, less enjoyable, and in some cases makes that good thing become bad, which couldn’t be any more true in terms of reboots.
