People of all ages have been heading straight to the movie theaters to watch their favorite childhood game hit the big screen. The ‘Minecraft Movie’ released recently on April 4th, and it broke box office records with the film taking $163 million in the first three days it was out, having the highest opening for a video game movie. This could be attributed to the millions of people who grew up playing the game or watching their favorite YouTubers play it. Everyone wants that hit of nostalgia, but even with high box office numbers and memes across the internet, the movie itself left so much to be desired and was lacking in so many aspects.

Without spoiling anything, the plot itself felt lackluster. It had taken many creative liberties, further separating itself from the original game. There was so much left to be desired with the story, it did not have any of the charm the original game had. However, there are a few good laughs, although they do not last long.
While the story was plain, the visuals certainly were not. The special effects and CGI in this movie were breathtaking, it really stayed true to the game. It felt as if these Minecraft mobs and creatures really came to life. The attention to detail was phenomenal, as you can almost feel the texture of the world we saw on the big screen.
The movie had many notable and experienced actors such as Jack Black (Steve), Jennifer Coolidge (Marlene), and Jason Momoa (Garret Garrison). Even these highly experienced actors could not save this movie from its poor writing, but they did provide charm and humor that left a lot of the audience laughing in the theaters. These three are the main highlights of the movie, especially the sub-plots that they were involved in.

However, not everyone can be as experienced as the acting from Sebastian Eugene Hansen, who played Henry, felt very cheesy. Some viewers couldn’t help but cringe at some of his scenes.
Overall, this movie is not something to take seriously. It definitely disappointed the audience as it is meant to represent this amazing game that shaped so many people’s childhoods.
On Rotten Tomatoes, this received a 48%; for my rating, it would be a ⅖ stars. This movie could have been something extraordinary, especially with all the opportunities that original Minecraft provided, but instead it was dumbed down. So if you are willing to look past what it could have been, watching this movie could provide you a great laugh.
