In November 2024, Donald Trump was elected to be the next President of the United States, and in January, he was inaugurated into the position. Taking a look on social media, there were Tik Tok Lives of people hoping he would win. It was surprising to find two women on Live shows scared Trump wouldn’t win. Since his win, people been wondering why.
“Some of the things Trump said were so outrageous that people just cling to the absurdity of what he was saying,” said history teacher Mr. Blaise Fatter.”It’s like when people gossip, they just want to hear more about it.” He explains that people might think that if someone as powerful as Trump is saying all these untrue things, then it can’t be a complete lie. However, in despite the clear lies, it appears that those who support him do so without conditions.
Mr. Fatter even argues that some Americans worship Trump. “They do think he’s more than just a politician,” he explained. “They think he really is a person that’s going to solve all their problems.”
And Mr. Fatter is right. At Mr. Trump’s rally, some people have been recorded saying “he’s like the second coming of Jesus.” There are posters that support this idea, too.
One of the most interesting videos about the election was found rom The Daily Show, where Desi Lydiac actually crashes out.
“America voted this guy out in 2020. And what has he done since then?” she challenges viewers. “He tried to overthrow the government. He was convicted of 34 felonies. He spent an entire campaign promising vengeances against his enemies.”
On the other hand, some genuinely feel that Trump was the better candidate for the highest office in the land. Junior, Jonathan Lopez, although unable to vote during Election Season, did see some of the good beyond the bad in Trump.
“If I could have voted back then, I might have voted for Trump,” Lopez said. “He seemed strong for the economy and focused on putting America first.”
However, after he saw other perspectives and learned more information, Lopez did change his mind. “Social media definitely played a big role,” Lopez said about his change of heart. “It spread information fast and shaped people’s opinions.”
As Lopez points out, social media is a large contributor to the viewpoints and available information to many Americans, and Mr. Fatter wonders about whether TikTok getting banned played a part in the outcome of the election.
“[The TikTok ban] became more real during Biden’s presidency and maybe some people thought if a Democrat was elected Tiktok was going to go away for real, and maybe it won’t happen if Trump gets elected,” Mr. Fatter said.
Eventually this did end up being the case, when the app was brought back after Trump’s inauguration. There was a post from Tiktok that said thanks to president Mr. Trump for saving Tiktok.
However, it was really just an act. Mr. Trump has wanted to get rid of Tik Tok since his last presidency in 2020, but now we are thanking him? This is making the uneducated easy to manipulate, and we have social media to thank for that.
Aside from social media, gender of the candidates could have played a role. But why didn’t the woman candidate win if it was said that Kamala Harris was the best candidate for this generation?
“Kamala Harris felt like a better option for Gen Z because she represents progress,” Lopez says. “I think some generations aren’t ready for a woman president.”
Mr. Fatter believes it went beyond gender and more so into her preparedness and policies, or lack thereof.
“I know some people said Kamala didn’t adequately represent and answer the questions during the debates, and Trump was just making a big deal out of things that were irrelevant,” Mr. Fatter explained.
And so neither of them were answering the questions, according to many. Most people just did not vote since they thought that both candidates were bad. In fact, third party elections have been getting more votes since 2016.
“ If candidates are not adequately answering the questions and giving real solutions to real problems, then people just are not going to vote,” Mr. Fatter said.
Junior Denise Ramirez Martinez is familiar with many people who voted for Trump this past November. As a devout Hispanic Catholic, however, she and others in her community were heartbroken.
“I was very surprised when I learned that he was Christian. I thought he was an atheist by the way he talked about others and proposed ideas for laws,” she said. “And seeing people who we thought would have our backs, our Catholic brothers and sisters, voted against us when they voted for Trump? I forgive them though I pray to God that they remember what it is to be a Catholic.”
Martinez explains that the late Pope Francis has spoken against Trump’s treatment towards immigrants back in 2016 and recently. Unfortunately, that did not stop catholics from voting for Mr.Trump.
So how did a criminal rapist like Mr. Trump win the election? How did the man who thinks his own daughter is “hot” who lies every moment of his day, get to be the president of the U.S.? Well not by chance, but because this was his plan. He is demonstrating how selfish, racist, and homophobic this country really is.
We don’t want a woman president because we never had one before? We are not ready for change. We don’t want a woman president because she agrees that transgender women should be able to use women’s bathrooms? She has never stated that we are uneducated. This country clearly loves gossip and drama and hates change. So many of us believe anything a man says, no matter how capable a woman can be. Because the few mistakes a woman makes are noticed, but when a man makes all the slip ups he wants, he still gets to be a great man.
That is how he managed to win, and that sick point of view needs to change.
