After listening to Logic’s most recent album “Ultra 85”, it has felt just to explain why Logic is among one of the best modern hip-hop artists of our time and is a top 10 artist.
Sir Robert Bryson Hall II was born on January 22, 1990, in Gaithersburg, Maryland, and is now an American rapper, singer, songwriter, and record producer. When he first started, he made mixtapes showcasing his rap skills, he also associated himself within the rap industry by working with Ghostface Killah in his early days. He gained traction in the early 2000s and signed to Def Jam Records to make his debut with the album “Under Pressure”.
Logic often focuses on deep, philosophical, and personal themes that separate Logic from other artists of today. He openly addresses topics like mental health, identity, and racism, particularly in albums like “Everybody” and “No Pressure”.
In addition to his lyrical skills, Logic’s commercial success is undeniable. With hits like “1-800-273-8255,” “44 More,” and “Gang Related” he has consistently topped charts and attracted millions of listeners. Logic’s reach extends beyond his music, he’s built a brand around his “Young Sinatra” persona and has also created a grand story centered around the theme of one of his albums “The Incredible True Story”.
Unlike many artists who rely on a single style or formula, Logic has shown remarkable versatility and growth throughout his career. What may drive his versatility may be him simply being heavily influenced by classic boom-bap and underground hip-hop. At the same time, his later albums, like “Confessions of a Dangerous Mind” and the “Bobby Tarintino” album series, have seen him experiment with more modern trap influences.
One major criticism point was Logic’s identity as a biracial artist in a genre historically dominated by Black voices. Some fans accused him of leaning too heavily into his “Biracial” narrative. When Logic made his points of emphasizing positivity, mental health, and personal growth, in his music, to some he sometimes came off as preachy or overly self-congratulatory to critics.
After retiring from mainstream rap in 2020, Logic’s reputation took another turn. He shifted focus to things outside of music, including streaming on Twitch, where he quickly became a popular figure. He also published a memoir, “This Bright Future”, and continued his exploration of mental health themes.
In 2021, Logic returned to music with “Vinyl Days”, a project that was a nod to his earlier style, having some nostalgic references. Marking this album as his final Album with Def Jam. Logic is now an independent artist striving to produce music for his true fans, his true followers that stayed through and through with him.
