The 2024 presidential election is just around the corner and the American people are able to decide our future president this coming November. People are able to vote for the democratic party, with candidate Kamala Haris accompanied with vice president Tim Walz. The second option, for the republican party with candidate Donald Trump, accompanied with vice president James David Vance. Voters are able to vote early by mail in ballot from Oct 25 to Oct 31, and in person voting begins on Tuesday, November 5, 2024.
With a new batch of young voters, it is vital for voters to know who they vote for, as their votes will dictate the nation’s outcome. It is also important to know the background of each of candiate and know their and promises they plan to do in power.
Democrats: Kamala Harris & Tim Walz.
Kamala is the current Vice president under President Biden. Harris made history on August 22, 2024 by officially accepting the Democratic presidential nomination while being endorsed by President Biden, becoming the first Black woman and Asian American to lead a major party’s presidential ticket. Tim Walz is Minnesota’s 41st Governor and is now running alongside Kamala Harris in her campaign. Their plan when is office follows a plan to aid the middle class, and uphold democracy.
Kamala Harris: Born on October 20, 1964 in Oakland, California, and was a daughter to immigrants. Her father Donald J. Harris was born in Jamaica and her mother Shyamala Gopalan Harris was born in India. Pursuing a carrer in law, Harris started working as a deputy district attorney in Alameda County. After that, she kept climbing the ladder, and was appointed California attorney general in November 2010, and then in November 2016, Harris secured the role of U.S. Senator for California. On November 7, 2020, Biden was announced as the 46th president, making Harris become the first Black and Asian American woman vice president in that role.
Tim Walz: Tim Walz was born in West Point, Nebraska, on April 6, 1964, to Darlene Rose Walz, a comunnirty activist and and James F. Walz, a public school administrator. Walz spent many years working in agriculture and factory positions while simultaneously being a member of the National Guard. He eventually enrolled in Chadron State Colleg and received his degree in 1989. He taught in China for a year and then came back to Nebraska to teach and coach football. He then was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives as a Democrat in 2006.
Republicans: Donald Trump & JD Vance.
Donald Trump served as the 45th president of the United States from 2016 to 2020 and is now seeking reelection in the 2024 presidential race. U.S. Senator JD Vance has been serving Ohio since 2023 as senator and is Donald Trump’s running mate for the 2024 Republican presidential campaign. The promises and plans Trump seems to follow when in power is to follow a document know as “Project 2025” where in the 900+ pages, follows a highly conservative plan to “Fix the nation”.
Donald Trump: Trump was born on June 14, 1946, born to Frederick Christ Trump, a successful real estate developer, and Mary MacLeod. Prior to entering politics, Donald Trump was recognized as a real estate magnate and a former TV personal. Trump was declared the official Republican candidate on July 19, 2016, and went on to defeat Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton on November 8, 2016, becoming the 45th president. In 2020 Trump failed to win a second term and was defeated by president Joe Biden in the election.
JD Vance: James David Vance was born on August 2, 1984, in Middletown, Ohio, to his mother, Beverly Vance, and father, Donald Bowman. Vance served in the U.S. Marine Corps for 4 years before he completed his studies at Yale Law School in 2013, and later went on to work as a corporate lawyer and venture capitalist. He has also written the highly popular memoir Hillbilly Elegy. Vance was sworn in as senator of Ohio on January 3, 2023 and in his time, aimed to help disadvantaged children and address problems such as drug addiction and the opioid epidemic.
This election holds great importance for the nations future. For Parkdale students who are elidgible to vote should participate to vote, as every vote does matter, no matter how little you may look at it.
