On April 3rd an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.4 struck Taiwan’s Eastern coast. Which was the strongest one that has hit Taiwan in over 25 years. The earthquake hit 93 miles south of Talpel. Which ended up killing 2,400 people and injuring over 10,000 people. With numbers still increasing as rescue teams try to find more people under all these rumblings.
Houses are seen tilted after the Earthquake with many peoples homes being destroyed. Many buildings have been destroyed as well. However Hospitals in Taipei City are operating normally despite structural damage.
Since the 7.4 magnitude earthquake has hit there has also been 29 aftershocks which has caused more destruction and the magnitudes are up to 6.0 near the epicenter.
With the aftershocks happening many people have not been able to feel safe because they don’t know when there will be another one.
81 year old Wang Qiu Xia Zhen says “it’s too scary being alone. I took three sleeping pills but I still couldn’t sleep.”
She is staying at a shelter and other people have started to stay at shelters because of these aftershocks. Taiwan’s Central Weather Administration spokesperson warned that some of these after shocks could reach a magnitude of 7.
Military personnel have been dispatched in Taiwan to help out with this disaster that has happened according to the defense ministry. With Firefighters and emergency workers trying to help save the people that are stuck in destroyed and demolished buildings that would be considered impossible to save. With the building having one basement level and nine floors above ground
“The Uranus building behind us is a very badly damaged place.” said Deputy Acting Chief Of Hualien Fire Department Lee Lung-Sheng.
President Lai Ching Te who is expected to take office next month had a speech outside a collapsed building stating that “At the present the most important thing, the top priority, is to rescue people.”
With The White House saying that they would stay ready to provide any assurance necessary to help Taiwan out during these difficult times for them.
Most power has been restored as well since the earthquake has hit Taiwan. With two nuclear stations affected by the earthquake. Taiwan’s high-speed rail operator said that there had been no damage or injuries on their trains although they are still going to make inspections.
The official central news station said that this earthquake was the biggest one since the one that hit Taiwan back in 1999 with a magnitude of 7.6 that ended up killing about 2,400 people and destroyed or damaged 50,000 buildings.
