The Parkdale Girls Lacrosse team has come back this spring season stronger than ever. With old players, new players, and both of the coaches’ new aspirations, the girls were able to secure back to back wins in their first four games.
Compared to last year the team is doing much better. They are beating teams that they had lost to the previous year and completely new teams they haven’t played before. Last year the girls had lost to Bladensburg during playoffs but now coming back stronger than ever, they beat them 15-4.
This success may be credited to many new bright and determined players signing up to play this year. As head coach Sara Lail says “We have a lot more girls on the team and our mentality and attitude towards teamwork is better this year.”
Not only have new players been training but returning players have also been training alongside the new girls, for the season since November in conditioning.
“I think the team this year is doing really well, a lot of people came a long way from last year and it is exciting to have a bigger team this year.” says sophomore and returning player Samantha Eury.
Their individual hard work has paid off as the girls as they began the season with a winning streak of four games, but it is not only their individual skills but as well as their trust in each other and teamwork which led to their early success.
“Everyone is positive on the team even if I keep to myself.” says freshman, and new player Greidys Romero.
Then there are the seniors, Jailyn Quinones and Afanwi Nkongsah, the top goal-scorers on the team. Both girls have been on this team since their sophomore years in 2021, and now are getting ready to play some of their last games with the Parkdale GLAX.
“As a senior, if I had anything to say about this year’s team it is that they proved me wrong and in the best way possible.” Quinones then continues saying. “I couldn’t be more proud of them and couldn’t be happier that this is my team for my senior year of lacrosse.”
With the many success also come some recent losses which were against Oxon Hill High School, 7-3, and CMIT High School, 10-3.
However the team came back for their senior night, winning against the team they ad lost to 5 years in a row, Northwestern High school with the score being 19-8.
As the team continues their season, they continue to work hard everyday so they achieve their goals. As co-coach, Jeremy Beller puts it “My hope for us is that we play harder everyday and even make it to regionals.”
