‘Dune: Part Two’ the sequel of ‘Dune’ (2021), based on Frank Herbert’s novel is the newest adaptation by Warner Bros. Picture released on March 1.
Denis Villeneuve film directed and produced both movies and co-wrote the screenplay with Jon Spaihts. Dune: Part Two received a budget of $190 million and has received a 95 percent audience rating score. This film stars actors Timothee Chalamet as Paul, Zendaya as Chani, Florence Pugh as Princess Irulan, Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica and Austin Butler as Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen.
The previous film (Dune 2021) leaves off with Paul killing Jamis with a crysknife. This knife was given to him by Chani his love interest, as they finally reunite. ‘Dune: Part Two’ is introduced with Paul and Lady Jessica uniting with the Fremen, who are natives in Arrakis. They seek revenge against the Imperium and the Harkonnens for the mass murdering of their loved ones.
‘Dune: Part Two’ is filled with betrayal, and a lot more fighting compared to its predecessor. In a recent conference held at CinemaCon 2023 in Las Vegas, Villeneuve informed viewers, “You can expect to see more fighting and less planning to fight in the sequel. Part One is more of a contemplative movie. Part Two is an action-packed, epic, war movie.”
As someone who struggled finishing the first film, due to overwhelming amounts of plot, this was convincing news. Not only did this film dive deeper into the ongoing wage war against House Harkonnen, it brings forth Paul destiny in becoming the messiah and his exploration in a new culture.
When questioned on the sequel, Parkdale senior Alan Nolasco Parada commented, “Its definitely worth watching as the first one left you on a bit of a cliffhanger and it dives deeper into Pauls destiny,” he follows this up stating, “I prefer the sequel, overall it had a better story, more action, and was more connected to the books.”
“I think the sequel is worth watching if you’ve seen the first move first and really payed attention,” said Parkdale senior Natalie Portillio, “I prefer the sequel because the first movie has less action and intensity.”
The start of the movie was already promising from the explorations of Paul’s identity, to the introduction of new characters, and the ending of many relationships. In the end Paul is no longer seen as a hero but instead showcased as the antagonist of the story due to his urges of political power.
The rating of ‘Dune: Part Two’ has received a 8.9/10 rating on IMDb. ‘Dune: Part Two’ has a run time of two hours and 46 minutes, and by far I would recommend checking the sequel out to receive closure needed in its predecessor. I would rate this movie a solid 8/10, it kept me engaged the whole time from the action pact scenes and intensity portrayed in certain characters’ roles.
The Dune franchise has no clear answer just yet of a renewal for a part three but by its ratings, we can infer a threequel is very likely on the rise.
