The Kansas City Chiefs are Super Bowl champions once again, beating the San Francisco 49ers in overtime by a score of 25-22 on Sunday’s SuperBowl showdown. The Chiefs are now the first team to repeat Super Bowl wins in a row since the New England Patriots back in 2005, and as low as the score may look the game was pretty entertaining as it had everything that fans wanted in the Super Bowl which on paper, was an matchup of the NFL’s most dominant offenses.
As surprising as it is, the Chiefs offense looked sloppy for most of the game as they were strugggling for most of the first half. Their first four drives produced a 52-yard completion to receiver Mecole Hardman on a pass that safety Tashaun Gipson seemed to lose in the stadium lights. However, they generated only 37 net yards on their 14 other plays. An Isiah Pacheco fumble on first-and-goal at the 49ers’ 9-yard line led to Kansas City going scoreless on those opening possessions. Mahomes and the offense failed to score a touchdown on any of their first nine drives, which is just the fourth time that has happened in 113 Patrick Mahomes starts.
The Chiefs were supposed to have a advantage on the ground however the rushing attack simply didn’t work for most of the game as they couldn’t move the ball with running back Isiah Pacheco carried the ball 18 times for a disappointing 59 yards, on top of that he was stopped on a pair of third and one opportunities.
Chiefs star quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who trailed by double digits in all 4 of his super bowl appearances, was in no trouble when the Chiefs went down by double digits late in the second quarter in route to leading an last minute drive in regulation in route to a game tying field goal to send the game to overtime.
In overtime, the 49ers went on to score an field goal on a 7 minute drive in which the Chiefs went on to return a touchdown which ended the game.
During the game alot of current and former players were active on social media during the game with the biggest surprise being former Chiefs superstar receiver Tyreek Hill who requested a trade from the Chiefs in the offseason. But others who were active during the game include Tyrann Mathieu, Micah Parsons, C.J. Gardener Johnson, and Jalen Ramsey.
Here are some of the quotes from the winning team:
“I know this is one of the greatest teams of all time, to go back to back,” star tight end Travis Kelce said after the win. “This is a this a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that I’ve been able to go through three times now, and it gets sweeter and sweeter every time. You can call us a dynasty. You can call us whatever you want. I know what we’ve got is something more special than really what you’ve seen in the NFL.”
“The Kansas City Chiefs are never underdogs, know that,” Mahomes said from the championship podium.
When asked about the slump that the Chiefs went in, head coach Andy Reid said “That was a good wake-up call for us, it gave our guys a nice little, for [lack of] a better term, a wake-up call that, ‘Listen we need to step things up here. Things aren’t just going to fall in our lap.'”
