Country Going Back In Time With Roe V. Wade
*Trigger Warning: Article mentions rape and incest.*
On May 3, the Supreme Court confirmed that a draft document was leaked, which overviewed the Court’s plan to overturn Roe v. Wade.
Roe v. Wade should be defended at all costs. There is no reason the Supreme Court should be deciding what women should and should not do with their body. At first, they declared abortion to be a fundamental right, guaranteed by the Supreme Court and now they want to change their mind.
Why? What brought about this change?
It started with Jane Roe, a 22-year old woman who was unmarried, unemployed, and pregnant for the third time, when she went to have an abortion in Texas. However, by the time the court ruled in her favor she had already given birth so she ended up giving the child up for adoption.
Henry Wade was a district attorney in Dallas whose job was to make sure that the state law stood by its law and stopped abortion.
In 1973, the question arose, “Does the Constitution recognize a woman’s right to terminate her pregnancy by abortion?”
The plaintiff, Roe alleged that the Texas Law “was unconstitutionally vague and violated her [constitutionally-given] right to privacy.”
At the time of this trial, abortion was only really legal in four states and was only allowed in dire consequences, including rape and incest. The Court ruled that the “The Constitution of the United States protects a pregnant woman’s liberty to choose to have an abortion without excessive government restriction”.
So, what happened in the past 40 years for the Supreme Court justices to change their minds now?
To start, the Supreme Court is made up of mostly conservative Justices, including Brett M. Kavanaugh, Associate Justice, Amy Coney Barrett, Associate Justice, and Neil M. Gorsuch, Associate Justice, who are all against a woman’s right to choose.
However, abortion reduces welfare costs to tax fare, reduces crime, and it also helps control the fast pace of the growing population. People like to say that, “life begins at conception, so unborn babies are human beings with the right to life.”
They however forget that “five out ten many of the women that get pregnant did not have a choice. Many of these women were raped or it was incest”. People who don’t support abortion, talk about giving up the child for abortion but they themselves don’t want to adopt, they are just talking to talk. Abortion is not murder because it is just a clump of a cell. It has not even taken the form of a person. Life starts after a fetus becomes “viable” which means it is able to survive outside of the womb or even after birth, not with conception. To put this to rest, “fetuses are incapable of feeling pain, when abortions are being performed”.
The American College of Obstetrician and Gynecologist says that there is “no legitimate scientific information that supports the statement that a fetus experiences pain.”
Other people argue that religion and culture are why abortion is wrong. However, culture opposes abortion but religion, like Islam, Christianity, and Hinduism, does not.. Particularly in Islam, the life of a Woman is more important than the life of the child.
Abortions something that takes choices away from women. They are reduced to nothing but an object. Even dogs receive better treatment. What is next for us? Will we get our rights taken away? I would not be surprised if this were the case.
