Over the years, undocumented immigrants have faced countless amounts of discrimination, most notably seen on national tv when former president Donald Trump spoke. Trump had no shame in calling undocumented immigrants “illegal aliens”, “rapists,” and “criminals”. Under the Trump administration, we saw how derogatory terms were widely spread, and with President Joe Biden´s administration, the current president had to order ICE to stop using the terms “alien” and “illegal alien” altogether. 

Using these slurs towards a group of people seeking a better life is dehumanizing someone, and degrading them just because of their birth origin.  How is it that someone could be “illegal” if they aren´t committing any crimes, and are actually benefitting the economy of the United States?

According to www.distpatch.com, 50-75 percent of undocumented citizens pay billions in taxes each year.

“Calling someone an illegal is degrading,” said Katia Castillo Diaz, a Youth Advocate for Maryland’s Multicultural Youth Center. “It implies that an individual is unlawful, but people who are labeled as ‘illegals’ come to the United States seeking a better opportunity for themselves and their families.” 

She added that “slurs are used with the intention to discriminate against someone and to harm them. They are also used to make people feel like they are doing something illegal just by existing.” 

This subject hits really close to home.  When I asked my parents how they felt about people labeling them as “illegal immigrants,” they said that it wasn’t fair because they live day to day just as any citizen would, they go to work, pay taxes, and reach for the impossible. 

“I came to this country when I was 17 years old with only 200 dollars in my pocket,” my father recounted. “I had no family, no place to stay, and no idea what I was doing, but I knew that this was the land of opportunity and I knew that I wanted to start a family and I wanted them to have a better life than I did and in a land full of opportunities, how could that be something ‘illegal’ to do?”

According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, they state that ¨ethnic slurs may constitute harassment if they create an offensive work environment or interfere with an individual’s work performance or equal employment opportunities. Discrimination based on national origin and race is in violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, as amended. Racial or ethnic slurs directed to or in the presence of a person will almost always be considered harassment.¨  

Throughout the years we have seen many protests where most posters say “no human is illegal on stolen land” or “no human being was born illegal.” However, even a number of of journalists–who are trusted members of society who should be leaving their bias at the door– are also using these dehumanizing terms in their articles.

Reporter Adam Shaw published an article Jan. 28 for Fox News titled ¨Senate Republican quiz Biden admin on TSA allowing illegal immigrants to use warrants for ID.¨ Similarly, Alyssa Guzman wrote an article for Dailymail.com published on Jan. 26th  titled ¨single adult illegal immigrants are seen being released into texas¨, and the list goes on and on of journalist who are discriminating against undocumented immigrants. 

The term “alien” unfortunately has been used in the United States for decades.

“During a long period of time, some politics have used this term to refer to someone who may have not been born in American land,” said Ms.Colon, a Spanish teacher at Parkdale, whose words have been translated from Spanish. “In my perspective, using this expression is totally unacceptable and discriminatory. Its only use is to pretend to establish different categories in humans and [perpetuate] discrimination, racism , and criminalizing human beings. In the same manner, when a politician uses these words, their intention is to promote racial and cultural polarization. This is why we need to be alert on our leaders and their speeches and political campaigns to see if they indirectly or directly use language that is supremacist.”

We also know that many undocumented immigrants have been forced to immigrate to the United States and sometimes in emergency where there isn’t time to do it the “legal” way.

“Calling someone ‘illegal’ can be an insult especially when it is being used intentionally to disparage another human being,” Ms. Colon said. “Currently in the world, there are millions of forced migrants– people [who] are forced to run away from their countries due to wars, robberies, natural disasters, or extreme poverty. The first thing that should be a priority in this debate should be the people and not necessarily their documentation status.”

Sobre los años ciudadanos indocumentados han enfrentado mucha descriminacion, y lo podemos ver en la television cuando el ex presidente Donald Trump habló. Trump no tenía pena en llamar ciudadanos indocumentados “aliens ilegales”, “ violadores”, e “criminales”. Debajo de la administracion de Donald Trump vosotros vimos muchos comentarios despectivos sobre ciudadanos indocumentados. La administracion de presidente Joe Biden tuvo que ordenar a ICE que pararan de usar las terminas “ilegal” y “alien ilegal”, cuando hablen sobre ciudadanos indocumentados.

Usando estas terminas sobre grupos de personas buscando una mejor vida es degradando a alguien solo por su origen de nacimiento. Cómo es que alguien puede ser ilegal si no están cometiendo crímenes, y en verdad están beneficiando la economia de Estados Unidos. “Llamando a alguien ilegal es degradante,” dijo Katia Castillo Diaz, una defensora de juventud para el centro de juventud multicultural de Maryland. “Implica que un individual es ilicito, pero personas que son etiquetados como ‘ilegal’, vienen a Estados Unidos tratando de buscar mejores oportunidades para ellos mismos y sus familias”

Diaz también dijo que “terminas como son usadas con la intencion de discriminar a alguien y para lastimarlos. Están hechas para que personas se sientan como que están haciendo algo ilegal solo por exister.”

Cuando yo le pregunté a mis papás como se sentian que personals los estaban etiquetando como “ilegal”, dijeron que no era justo porque viven día a día como cualquier ciudadano, van a trabajar, pagan impuestos, y alcanzan lo imposible.

“Vine a este pais cuando tenía 17 años y con solo 200 dólares,” dijo mi papa. “No tenía familia, donde vivir , y no tenia idea lo que iba hacer, pero sabía que esta era la tierra de oportunidades y sabia que queria empezar una familia y queria que tuvieran una mejor vida de lo que yo tuve llena de oportunidades, como eso puede ser ilegal?”

Segun  Aduanas y Proteccion de Fronteras de EE.UU, ellos declaran “terminas ethnicas discriminatorias constituyen acoso si crean un ambiente ofensivo o interfere con el desempeño o oportunidad igual de empleo. Discriminacion basada en origen nacional o raza es una violacion de el titulo VII de derechos civiles del año 1964. Insultos etnicos o raciales que son directos a alguien siempre van a ser considaros acoso.”

Durante los últimos años hemos visto muchas protestas, y posters que lean “no humano es ilegal en tierra robada” o “no humano es nacido ilegal”.

Muchos periodistas, que deben ser gente en la que confiamos, han usado estas terminas discriminatorias en sus artículos.

Adam Shaw publicó un artículo el 28 de Enero para Fox News con en título “Senador Republicano examinan la administarcion de Biden en TSA dejando inmigrantes ilegal usar una orden como ID.” Similarmente, Alyssa Guzan escribió un artículo para Dailymail.com publicado el 26 de enero titulado “Solo adultos de inmigrantes ilegales visto liberados en Texas¨, y la lista sigue de periodistas que discriman ciudadanos indocumentados.

“El término “alien” lamentablemente ha sido utilizado en los Estados Unidos durante mucho tiempo por algunos políticos para referirse a cualquier persona que no haya nacido en suelo estadounidense,” dijo Srta. Colon, una maestra de español de Parkdale. “Desde mi perspectiva, utilizar esta expresión es totalmente inaceptable y discriminatoria. Su única finalidad es pretender establecer diferentes categorías humanas, fomentar la discriminación, el rascismo y criminalizar a seres humanos. De igual manera, cuando un político utiliza estas palabras su intención es promover la polarización racial y cultural. Por ello, debemos estar alerta a aquellos “líderes” que en sus discursos o campañas políticas de manera directa o indirecta utilizan lenguaje supremacista en esta nación.”

También se sabe que muchos de ciudadanos indocumentados han acido forzado de emigrar a Estados Unidos y avises de emergencia y no hay tiempo de serlo en manera “legal.”

“Llamar a una persona ‘ilegal’ puede ser un insulto, máxime, cuando se utiliza de manera intencionada para denigrar o menospreciar a otro ser humano,” dijo Sra. Colon. “Actualmente en el mundo hay millones de migrantes forzados. Personas que se han visto obligadas a huir de sus países por factores como: guerras, delincuencia, desastres naturales o extrema pobreza. Por lo que en primera instancia lo que debe tener prioridad en este debate deben ser las personas y no necesariamente su documentación.”
