In today’s world, there are about 2.3 billion followers of Christianity, 1.9 billion followers of Islam, 1.1 billion followers of Hinduism and around 1.2 billions of humans that are secular, nonreligious, Agnostic or Atheist. You might wonder to yourself, “What makes Christianity so different from all the other religions that billions of people follow?”
Getting to know Christ and learning about what he has done, is a great way to start your journey. It’s okay to be skeptical about jumping into something new, but the key is to inform yourself about the topic before you walk away with an opinion. For those of us that are Christian, the bible teaches us, “Let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger,” (James 1:19). We should halt judgment on people or things until we have had enough time to fully and thoroughly understand what is going on in the situation or subject before jumping to conclusions.
Values of Christian Life
Family- All of us are equal because all of us are made in the image of god. We value people, even when it may cost us at times because people are valuable. God created humans in his image, male and female, giving humans dignity to love themselves and others. Keeping a family is important. The Lord instructs his people to train their children in a way of holiness and truth, so that they grow up to have strong healthy families too. Humans today may come up with ideas to create separation from one another, such as race, politics and even other religions.
However, the truth is that no one is better than anyone because God made us all equal. God made a male and female, “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh,” (Genesis 2:24). This is where marriage plays a big role in family. In Genesis, it talks about how when a man and woman get married, they become one. When being in this kind of relationship, you make it your number one priority, second only to their relationship with God. The benefits of marriage are what keeps a society together. Having a mother and father in the household together, while raising kids, is beneficial for the kids short and long term. So overall, the power of having a strong family and a good relationship with your significant other, are crucial factors of your life and in God’s eyes.
Love Your Neighbor As Yourself- This is something that is taught to Christians in the Bible, where it says, “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with thy whole heart, and with thy whole soul, and with thy whole mind… And the second is like to this: Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself,” (Matthew 22: 35-40). This value teaches us that with time and repetition, learning how to love ourselves in the way that Christ calls us to do so, may better your relationship with others around you. However, the reason why this takes time to learn is due to the fact that when learning to love yourself, you need to maintain your values and not become self obsessed and decide not to help others for your own benefit. It’s a task that is easier said than done, but the good thing about it is that no matter how hard you try to be respectful and kind, the little things you do can make the biggest impact in someone else’s life.
Repent of Your Sins- Jesus died on the cross for the sins of the world and has allowed us to receive the gift of everlasting life, as long as we reach out and accept him. Humans sin everyday and never in history has a person, other than Christ, walked the Earth and lived a perfect sinless life. We are born of original sin, “Original sin arose from Adam and Eve’s transgression in Eden, the sin of disobedience in eating the forbidden fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.” Original sin can be explained as, “That sin and its guilt that we all possess in God’s eyes as a direct result of Adam’s sin in the Garden of Eden.” Repentance is realizing that you have broken the law of God and acknowledge it. Not only do you acknowledge that you have sinned, but you also must renounce the sin you have committed. Anyone can apologize for making a mistake, but what makes an apology a full hearted one, is when you choose to stop allowing yourself from making that mistake so that you will no longer have to apologize again. Jesus took your place and received the punishment of your sin. Now, God asks for you to repent of your past sins, trust and believe in him, give your life to him and you will be saved.
Reasons Why Christianity is Separate From Other Religions
1- Christianity is overall about God’s plan to save us from death, and entering into a relationship with him in order to have everlasting life. The whole premise of Christianity being true is entirely based on the fact that Jesus rose from the dead. Even in the Bible, Paul the Apostle says, “And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins. Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ are lost. If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are of all people most to be pitied,” (1 Corinthians 15:17-19). Christianity teaches that those who put their faith and trust in Christ will too rise from the dead, just as Christ was raised from death to life. There are plenty of historical facts and different types of evidence that support the resurrection of Jesus, and are agreed upon by all historians. Overall, when it comes to evidence to back up a religion, no other religion comes close to Christianity.
2- According to Christianity, good people aren’t saved. The standard of being good is subjective and everyone can have their own belief of what makes a person good. If you do not entirely follow the commandments that God has laid out for you, you are not considered good by God’s standards. Many people still claim themselves good people by their moral standards and live by those standards, thinking that what they do is good enough to get to heaven. This makes them think that they don’t need anything else to get accepted. The moment after your death, you could be judged by God, based not by the commandments he has given you, but by the moral standards you laid out for yourself and still fail those very standards. No matter what someone thinks a good person is, you will never live up to those standards just like any other human. The reality of the matter is that everyone thinks they are better than they really are, even by their own standards. These reasons just prove why we need a savior to look up to for forgiveness and repentance. In Christianity, the laws weren’t to show how good someone is but to show how good you aren’t, so that we realise that we are in need of a savior.
3- In other religions your hard work, morality or faithfulness determines whether you go to heaven or not, but in Christianity it’s somewhat the opposite. In Christianity you don’t get to heaven by being more moral or trying harder than others. Like I said previously, people can’t even live up to their own standards of morality, let alone God’s standards. What ensures that we have a spot to everlasting life, is all from what Jesus did on the cross and the perfectly biblical moral life he lived for us. All we have to do is reach out and accept him and believe in him. There’s a reason why Jesus is called a lamb of God. It is due to him being a sacrifice for our sins so we could live forever and have the opportunity to be with God.
